Travel notes:  we are big fans of Easyjet having flown into Alicante and also into both Madrid and Barcelona, hired a car for the drive down and explored Spain on the way. We have flown into Alicante and returned from Madrid, Barcelona and Malaga. Ryanair flies into Murcia/St Javier.  Other low-cost airlines are heading for the Costa Blanca with increasing frequency. In June '06 we flew into Bilbao and drove via Segovia, Salamanca and Avila to the house, flying back from Alicante.

We recommend www.carjet.com for car hire...it and its associated companies give good prices (including one way rentals from say Madrid-Alicante and using an Alicante based associated company for the local rental)

HOWE'S HELPFUL HINTS FOR BUYING AND LIVING IN SPAIN.

We are increasingly getting frustrated with the "bad press" the Costas are getting in the national papers and from reports from both residents and holidaymakers about the colonisation of the area by the British and other nationalities.  People on holiday seem to get drunk on sunshine and leave their brains at home, so buy a house paying no regard at all to the legalities/language etc. We can't stress enough, the first of the paragraphs below.  You see it on most of the holiday programmes - "We wish we had learnt the language" or "We couldn't organise our business as we didn't know the language".

Learn the language. It is a fallacy that all foreigners speak English. Some new developments are in totally rural "Spanish" areas. At least try and learn to pronounce the alphabet and learn basic words. We feel that it is totally arrogant to go and expect the "natives" to speak English and comply with our way of life. Away from the coastal strip there is very little English spoken - and why should there be?

Don’t live in a totally "British" area. If you want to become an “Ex-Pat” by all means do so but think seriously first.

Don’t live on the seafront or by bars etc - gets noisy. Inland there are lovely towns and villages, some with new developments, and prices tend to be cheaper.

A resale on an urbanizacion may be better than a home with a view - homes with views tend to get built infront of! And, an established area has all the services up and running.

Don’t expect it to be like in the UK. – Spain is a foreign country not a suburb of the UK, although one wonders with horror, sometimes.

Buy property with a garden – it will need upkeep and will keep you busy.

Buy property a little bigger than you need – you will need space for living and storage.

Get a job, have a hobby, interest, join a club etc as time can drag. And it does!

Sitting in the hot sun with a drink can pall after a while. It is very easy to drink and smoke oneself to death. People do. Our vicar friend is now burying  those in their early 50s. Update - after burying 180 ex-pats a year he is returning to the UK unable to do his ministry.

Take exercise – it does you good, fills in the time, and you can meet others. Buy a pet.

Expect bad weather especially in winter.  Remember the Mediterranean climate is "Hot, dry summers, Warm, wet winters". And "Hot" means HOT - can you stand 35c for days on end.

Get a phone so you can be in contact with the outside world and you can use PC/internet too.

Don’t mistrust or criticise the Spanish..they are just like us.   They are certainly not stupid and lazy.

Don’t get taken in by Brits who want to help..they are often the ones to be watched.
