Your Questions Answered
WHAT IS MASSAGE THERAPY?
One dictionary defines it as "the kneading
and rubbing of muscles with hands" and to
some extent that is a true description.
WHAT DOES "KNEADING AND RUBBING" DO
TO THE MUSCLES?
Muscles are essential to movement and, like every
part of the body, are fed with a blood supply
which invigorates them. During use, muscles give
out waste products (toxins) which the body slowly
digests through the lymphatic and blood systems.
Massage speeds up this waste removal system, so
making the muscles ready for action again in a
much shorter time.
WHO ARE THE THERAPISTS?
David and Kathy Howe. As qualified teachers they
have had over 35 years experience in dealing with
people and the confidentialities involved. They
did their massage training in London and hold
the International Therapy Examination Council
Diploma in Anatomy, Physiology and Massage, the
ITEC Diplomas in Sports Therapy and Aromatherapy
and both a Sports Massage Certificate and Deep
Tissue Bodywork Certificate from the New Mexico
Academy in Santa Fe, USA. David and Kathy's membership
of the Independent Professional Therapists International
gives full insurance cover. They were Principals
of the Carlisle Massage School.
DO MASSAGE THERAPISTS TREAT INJURIES?
Every ache and pain we have is probably an injury
caused by abuse or over-use of the body. The therapist
can go a long way to help to successfully treat
these problems in soft tissue which benefit from
massage. With some problems, especially in sports
people, David and Kathv use ice and rest in the
initial stages of an injury plus massage and ultrasound
later.
WHAT IS SPORTS MASSAGE?
This is an American technique of deep tissue massage,
pre-event, post-event and maintenance massage
where different strokes are used in comparison
with regular massage. A little discomfort may
be felt but this clears up in 24 hours. Deep tissue
massage is really beneficial to active people.
David and Kathy are sports massage therapists
and have studied in the USA.
WHAT IS AROMATHERAPY MASSAGE?
Instead of using regular massage oils, David and
Kathv will give a massage using aromatic oils
extracted from plants and herbs which penetrate
the body and the body's systems. An aromatherapy
massage is very relaxing and soothing and can
be a relief in our stressful lives.
D0 YOU TEACH MASSAGE?
Not any more. David and Kathy were principals
of the Carlisle Massage School at the Sands Centre
which was an ITEC registered School. The School
held courses at two levels: Basic Beginners (10
hours) and professional ITEC Diploma (100 hours).
Due to market forces we have had to suspend massage
teaching.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AT A MASSAGE SESSION?
All first appointments have a consultation to
check on any health and medical problems which
may affect massage, and to get a good idea of
the client's problems and lifestyle. The main
'contraindications to massage', as they are called,
are varicose veins and heart problems. In extreme
cases a GP would be contacted before therapy could
begin. After consultation, the client would undress
(in private), wrap in a clean towel and await
therapy. The therapist would oil the body and
commence massage.
CAN I CHOOSE A THERAPIST?
Normally "Yes". but unfortunately only
David is now available for massage therapy. All
therapy is strictly confidential, according to
professional codes, by a trained and qualified
professional therapist. You would have nothing
to fear.
IS MASSAGE COSTLY?
What isn't these days ... but it is worthwhile
given the benefits. The cost is £25 for
a one hour period (or £13 for a half hour
period). Aromatherapy and Sports Massage are a
little more expensive. There is a reduced rate
for a course of therapy paid for in advance.
HOW DO I BOOK AN APPOINTMENT?
Call on 01228 511819. I am available most evenings
and often during the day.
